What Is Exercise, Really?

By Josef DellaGrotte Ph.D.

Research known for some time shows that the human body needs about 10,000 movements each day - much like its minimum daily requirement. With so much sitting and sedentary life, the average American gets half of this. This alone will explain the majority of musculo-skeletal pains. The reason that exercise has become gym-oriented and aerobically jacked up is to compensate for this extreme deficiency.

Good exercise comes from the daily activities of life - from walking to go shopping, cleaning the house - everything. Further research has shown that people who get their exercise in everyday life actually are healthier and live longer than the gym folk and weekend warriors. The reason: they do exercise every day, till the day they die, so to speak. [Zorba Paster, M.D., The Longevity Code]

Real exercise is a normal, natural, enjoyable activity which, when done well, enhances the quality of life. Now imagine how much more this enhancement can be if the exercising is also done efficiently, following the pathways that movement forces travel through best. The six principal pathways is a rediscovery of what was intuitively known before. But this time it can be shown in detail. The brain/central nervous system has no interest in particular muscles, only how they work to bring about a functional act. This functional act is the basis of true exercise. So, make your exercise be what you like to do.
